musical residence
BANG ON A CAN

Moscow,
February 23 - 27, 2014

National Center for Contemporary Art (NCCA)  and  Theater Center STD RF  "On Passion"  present the musical residence of the legendary American band  Bang on a Can  in Moscow.

Bang on a Can  held a series of master classes, for participation in which 15 young Russian performers and composers were selected. Bang on a Can will perform at the opening of the musical residency on February 23 at the STD RF Theater Center Na Strastnoy. At the end of a series of master classes on February 27, a joint concert of the legendary band and the participants of the residence took place.

Founded by young American composers David Lang, Julia Wolf and Michael Gordon, the New York musical group Bang on a Can (literally "Blow on the Tin Can") has set several goals since its inception: promoting cutting-edge music, discovering unexpected facets of musician interaction and listener, creating both experimental performance practices and unique, absolutely unique conditions for the perception of the music of the future.

Since 1987, Bang on a Can has been running marathons featuring music from a variety of genres, written by little-known composers. The main idea of the project was to overcome the rigid division into scenes that existed then in the New York avant-garde, and create a platform where both minimalists and avant-rockers could speak out, as well as improvisers, representatives of Ambient and Field Recordings, who began to perform my music in public thanks in large part to
Bang on a Can.

Over the years, Bang on a Can has grown into a major organization with hundreds of musical projects around the world, bringing together such notable figures as Brian Eno, Meredith Monk, Philip Glass and Johann Johannsson.

In 2002, Bang on a Can opened the Music Institute at the Massachusetts Museum of Modern Art, which brings together 35 young composers and performers from around the world each year, selected from hundreds of entries. Aspiring professionals are exposed to musical innovations by working on the latest music performances with leading professionals in the field of electroacoustics and sound engineering.
